Times tables, practised calmly

Pick a table, or mix them all. Ten questions, no clock, no ads.

Pick a table

All of them mixed

Ten questions from across the tables. A wrong answer shows the spots, so your child can count their way to the right one.

The practice needs JavaScript. The whole table and its trick are below.

The times table chart

Every fact from 1 × 1 to 10 × 10. Print it for the fridge, or for a quick look while practising.

The order that makes them easier

Learned in this order, each table leans on the ones before it. It is the order Spots teaches them in.

  1. ×1×10The anchors: ×1 stays the same, ×10 adds a zero.
  2. ×2×5Doubling, and half of ×10.
  3. ×4×8Double the 2s, then double again.
  4. ×3×6×9×2 and one more group, double the 3s, and ×10 minus one group.
  5. ×7Last, because by now only 7 × 7 = 49 is new.

Questions parents ask

Which order should children learn the times tables in?

Start with the 1, 10, 2 and 5 times tables, then the 4 and 8 times tables (doubling), then 3, 6 and 9, and the 7 times table last. Each table then builds on facts your child already knows, and by the time the 7s come, only 7 × 7 is new.

When do Australian children learn their times tables?

The Australian Curriculum (version 9) asks for the twos in Year 2, the 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 3, and all facts up to 10 × 10 in Year 4. States and schools set their own pace within that.

Should times tables be practised against the clock?

Not at first. Many children tense up when a timer runs, and the answer comes quickly once it is truly known. These pages and the Spots app have no clock: your child first sees why a fact is true, then practises until it comes from memory.

How long does it take to learn the times tables?

Most children learn them over a school year or two, a few tables at a time. Ten minutes on most days does more than one long session a week.

Want more than practice?

Spots is our app for iPhone and iPad. It teaches every table from 1 to 10 with the same ladybug, badges and short picture stories, then shows you exactly which of the 55 facts your child knows.
