Times tables, practised calmly
Times tables speed test
How many can you answer in one minute? Only your own best counts.
The practice needs JavaScript. The whole table and its trick are below.
A printable times tables test
Forty mixed sums from the 2 to the 10 times tables on one page, with a box for the time it took. Do it again in a few weeks and compare.
Speed comes last
A speed test only makes sense once the facts are known. Many children who freeze on timed tests do better when they first understand each table and practise without a clock. Use the test now and then to see progress, not as the way to learn.
Questions parents ask
How many times tables questions should a child answer in a minute?
There is no official number in Australia. As a rough guide, the UK’s Year 4 multiplication check allows 6 seconds per question, which is about 10 a minute. What matters most is that your child’s own score goes up.
Are timed times tables tests bad for children?
Not for every child, but some find them stressful, and parents describe tears over strict timers. Keep tests short and optional, compare only with your child’s own best, and learn the facts without a clock first.
How do I use the printable test?
Print it, start a timer, and write the time in the box when your child finishes. A few weeks later, do it again and compare the time and the number right.
