Times tables, practised calmly
Times tables in Year 3
The 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables. Ten questions, no clock.
The practice needs JavaScript. The whole table and its trick are below.
What Year 3 children are expected to know
The Australian Curriculum (version 9) asks Year 3 students to recall the multiplication facts for 3, 4, 5 and 10, and to use them for the related division facts. The twos come first, in Year 2. States and schools set their own pace within that.
How to help at home
- Start with 10 and 5: ×10 adds a zero, and ×5 is half of ×10.
- Then the 4s as double the 2s, and the 3s as the 2s plus one more group.
- Ten minutes on most days does more than one long session a week.
- Let your child count the groups first. Speed comes once the facts are known.
Questions parents ask
Which times tables should a Year 3 child know?
By the end of Year 3: the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables, with the twos already from Year 2. The 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables come in Year 4.
Is it normal for a Year 3 child not to know their times tables yet?
Yes. Year 3 is when many children meet the tables properly, and the Curriculum gives them until the end of Year 4 for all facts up to 10 × 10.
