Times tables, practised calmly

The 3 times table

Ten questions, no clock. A wrong answer shows the spots.

The practice needs JavaScript. The whole table and its trick are below.

The whole 3 times table

  1. 1 × 3 = 3
  2. 2 × 3 = 6
  3. 3 × 3 = 9
  4. 4 × 3 = 12
  5. 5 × 3 = 15
  6. 6 × 3 = 18
  7. 7 × 3 = 21
  8. 8 × 3 = 24
  9. 9 × 3 = 27
  10. 10 × 3 = 30

The trick: double, and one more

The 3 times table builds on the twos: double the number, then add one more group. It is the first table without an easy pattern in its answers, so the trick really helps.

  1. 6 × 3? First 6 × 2 = 12.
  2. One more 6: 18!

The ones to watch

These are the 3 times table facts children miss most often: 9 × 3. Give them a little extra practice.

A 3 times table worksheet

Twenty sums from the 3 times table on one page, with a line to count in 3s. It prints on A4 or Letter paper.

Questions parents ask

What is the trick for the 3 times table?

Double, and one more. For example: 6 × 3? First 6 × 2 = 12. One more 6: 18!

When do children learn the 3 times table?

In Year 3, together with the 4, 5 and 10 times tables.

Is there a pattern in the 3 times table?

The digits of every answer add up to 3, 6 or 9: 18 gives 1 + 8 = 9, 24 gives 6. It is a handy way to check an answer, but the doubling trick is quicker for finding one.
