Times tables, practised calmly

The 9 times table

Ten questions, no clock. A wrong answer shows the spots.

The practice needs JavaScript. The whole table and its trick are below.

The whole 9 times table

  1. 1 × 9 = 9
  2. 2 × 9 = 18
  3. 3 × 9 = 27
  4. 4 × 9 = 36
  5. 5 × 9 = 45
  6. 6 × 9 = 54
  7. 7 × 9 = 63
  8. 8 × 9 = 72
  9. 9 × 9 = 81
  10. 10 × 9 = 90

The trick: ×10, minus one

The 9 times table is the 10 times table minus one group: 6 × 9 is 60 minus 6, which is 54. The digits of every answer also add up to 9.

  1. 6 × 9? First 6 × 10 = 60.
  2. Take one 6 away: 54!

The ones to watch

These are the 9 times table facts children miss most often: 3 × 9, 6 × 9, 7 × 9. Give them a little extra practice.

A 9 times table worksheet

Questions parents ask

What is the trick for the 9 times table?

×10, minus one. For example: 6 × 9? First 6 × 10 = 60. Take one 6 away: 54!

When do children learn the 9 times table?

In Year 4, when the Australian Curriculum asks for all facts up to 10 × 10.

What is the finger trick for the 9 times table?

Hold up ten fingers and fold down finger number 4 for 4 × 9. The 3 fingers before it are the tens and the 6 after it are the ones: 36. It is a fun check, but ×10 minus one group also shows why it works.
