Times tables, practised calmly

The 4 times table

Ten questions, no clock. A wrong answer shows the spots.

The practice needs JavaScript. The whole table and its trick are below.

The whole 4 times table

  1. 1 × 4 = 4
  2. 2 × 4 = 8
  3. 3 × 4 = 12
  4. 4 × 4 = 16
  5. 5 × 4 = 20
  6. 6 × 4 = 24
  7. 7 × 4 = 28
  8. 8 × 4 = 32
  9. 9 × 4 = 36
  10. 10 × 4 = 40

The trick: double, double

The 4 times table is the 2 times table doubled. If your child knows 6 × 2 = 12, then 6 × 4 is double that: 24.

  1. 6 × 4? Take 6.
  2. Double it: 12.
  3. Double again: 24!

The ones to watch

These are the 4 times table facts children miss most often: 7 × 4, 8 × 4. Give them a little extra practice.

A 4 times table worksheet

Twenty sums from the 4 times table on one page, with a line to count in 4s. It prints on A4 or Letter paper.

Questions parents ask

What is the trick for the 4 times table?

Double, double. For example: 6 × 4? Take 6. Double it: 12. Double again: 24!

When do children learn the 4 times table?

In Year 3, together with the 3, 5 and 10 times tables.

How is the 4 times table linked to the 2 times table?

Every answer in the 4 times table is double the answer in the 2 times table: 7 × 2 = 14, so 7 × 4 = 28. Learning them one after the other makes the fours almost free.
